PHD ~ Nikon D90 ~ Needs Serviced Already!

I have to send my Nikon D90 that is six weeks old to be serviced already!
They told me to ship it to:

Nikon Inc ~Factory Service
1300 Walt Whitman
Melville, NY 11747

So, I was out with the Casio and my mum again picking up more snowday suplies at Target. They are piling the snow high and deeper here in Ohio this winter.

She looks really short in front of this pile.

My 365: More Snow Dog

I had my dog Zippy out in the snow again today. This picture was taken with my Nikon D90 using a polarizing filter. Of course the camera blew that "err" code again in fact it did it twice this morning and once the day I was at Moreland. I'll be calling Nikon tech support about this it's certainly annoying.

I'm actually thinking about starting a side blog called "To err is Nikon."

I got Warholized...

Hockney'd my friends dad...

And did a map of everywhere I have been in my life so far...

My 365: Burning Down the House

Mom and I built a volcano science project in the oven today instead of the mississippi jam cupcakes we were trying to make. Its amazing that a little extra baking soda can turn three cups of ingredients into endlessly flowing molten, even oven destroying lava..

The house didn't really burn down but the oven I think is destroyed.

My 365: Three Elizabeth's

Today I went to Aurora, Ohio and looked around a few specialty stores for furniture for my mom's boyfriend's apartment that needs a serious updating. We ended up re-decorating the store.

The white flowers against a white wall didn't look too good so we changed it.

Nikon Support ~ "err" message

This morning I called Nikon Support about that "err" message I couldn't get rid of and the rep talked me through some trouble shooting and got my camera reset so it will work once again. The solution was:

Turn camera off and remove battery
replace battery, turn camera on, and depress shutter
depress the two green reset buttons

This worked and I am now once again taking pictures, She had me take a few while she was registering my camera and assigning a case number to track my problems. Nikon keeps a record of your problems.

My 365: Oberlin College

Today my mom and I drove to Oberlin, Ohio and had lunch at the Oberlin Inn after walking around the college campus in 3 degree weather. It was so cold my Nikon D90 froze up with that "err" code again and no amount of taking the battery in and out would fix it. Thank goodness I had a my Casio as a spare in my purse.

Story Collage & Nikon D90 "err" Message

This collage actually tells a story...

Dog owners are going to figure this one out easily.

I had my second camera class today and we went over ISO and the different program settings like A, S, P, & M. I didn't learn much except that when you get a flashing "err" message on your D90 you need to turn it off and remove the battery and memory card to get it to reset amd the shutter to release. I hope this isn't indicative of something being wrong with my Nikon D90 camera.

This is the first trouble I have had with it and if it happens again i'll look into it but since it has only happened once maybe it could be the battery just got too cold.

My 365: Lakeland Community College

Taken in the student center at Lakeland Community College in Kirtland, Ohio. I was waiting on my camera class to start and admiring the snow covered glass skylights.

Project 365: See your life in a new way!

People will often say that their whole lives flashed before their eyes after they experienced a traumatic event. Perhaps it’s a bit morbid, but we think that sounds pretty incredible.

When Taylor McKnight started taking a photo a day on January 1st, 2004, he never imagined the project would not only serve as a way to remember a year, but also help him understand what was important to him in his life.

Whether it was his relationships, his career, or his fashion sense, recording a photo a day for a whole year left him with a rich visual history of his life. And it made him a better photographer to boot!

Read the entire article here at Photojojo

Here are the tutorials six tips on how to create your own Project 365:

Bring Your Camera Everywhere ~ I carry mine in my purse

Make Posting Easy ~ I use Googles Picasa which has an upload dirct button to blogger & a web albumn

Vary Your Themes ~ I take a photo to remind me of what I did that day like for instance my recent trip to the Bonnie Bell headquarters in Lakewood, OH

Tell a Story ~ some of the pictures might not make sense to anyone but me and that's okay because they are my memories.

Don’t Stop, No Matter What

Post early, post often

MY 365: 3 day notice

Sad day here... I had to type up the 3 day notice for a single mom and her two small children. In Ohio, a three day notice is given before eviction proceedings are started.

This unfortunate soul has bounced her December rent check and not yet paid for January. I hate to think of putting a family out in the cold especially in this crappy economy, but it's not my decision to make. I'm just the delivery person and typist. I do struggle with jobs like this.

This is the front door after I taped the envelope with the notice in it. I pray she will get current before next Wednesday and avoid the eviction process.

Today I had lunch at Nordstroms with my mom and we talked about redecorating her new boyfriend's apartment. She liked this bed set.

This was taken with my Casio camera. It's Just too hard to carry a D90 along in your purse for impromptu snapshots.

Resizing Photos

Since I have started shooting in FINE mode a lot of time my pictures are just huge. This is great for ordering prints Nand cropping and editing etc. But when it comes to sharing them on the Internet, they just are way too big and slwo to load for most views.

Today I found a piece of Freeware that will allow you to resize your images even an entire folder or batch at a time.

PIXresizer freeware

Here is a picture taken by my California friend recently resized for faster loading.

Exposure Compensation +1.7

I asked my Yahoo digital photography groups for some pointers on avoiding grey looking snow. I asked and the first answer was...

The short answer is set the Exposure Compensation to +1.5.

The long answer is to set your LCD to display
"Highlights", and then adjust exposure (using Exposure
Compensation if you like, or by using Manual Mode) until
the snow would blink (be "overexposed") if you cranked
in any more exposure. That is, increase exposure until
it blinks, and then back off one step.
--Floyd

So, I dug out my Nikon manual and adjusted the exposure compensation to +1.7. I couldn't figure out how on P mode to get it at +1.5, just +1.3 or +1.7. This is the result...

This is a vast improvement over the last one. However, I think the shutter was a little slow and it cost me in clarity.

Let it snow....

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow

It doesn't show signs of stopping
And I've bought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Sadly, the snow looks grey and I don't know how to fix things like that yet. I did sign up for the February Short Course - Winter Photography. Hopefully, this will help and we will still have snow then to practice shooting.
